Proton Transfer Quenching of the MLCT Excited State of Ru(phen)2dppz2+ in Homogeneous Solution and Bound to DNA

چکیده
The bimolecular quenching of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state of Ru(phen)z(dppz)2+ (phen = 1,lO-phenanthroline, dppz = dipyrido[3,2-a:2’,3’-clphenazine) by proton transfer has been investigated in homogeneous acetonitrile solutions and in the presence of calf thymus DNA. In acetonitrile the monoexponential decay of the MLCT excited state emission of R~(phen)2(dppz)~+ is dynamically quenched by proton donors with pKa = 4.7-15.7. The emission lifetimes and quenching when the complex is bound to DNA have been measured for racemic mixtures, as well as Aand A-R~(phen)2(dppz)~+, and the values compared. In the presence of DNA the biexponential decay of the emission is quenched dynamically and three times slower than in acetonitrile when the quencher, in this case hydroquinone, is hydrophilic. Static quenching is observed in the presence of DNA when a hydrophobic proton donor, o-chlorophenol, is utilized. The static quenching with o-chlorophenol is shown to arise solely from the quenching of the long-lived component. These observations are explained in terms of two different modes of binding between the complex and DNA, as well as the different affinities for the aqueous medium of the quenchers.

Characterization of dipyridophenazine complexes of ruthenium(II): the light switch effect as a function of nucleic acid sequence and conformation.
Spectroscopic parameters for two novel ruthenium complexes on binding to nucleic acids of varying sequences and conformations have been determined. These complexes, Ru(bpy)2dppz2+ and Ru(phen)2dppz2+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; dppz = dipyrido[3,2:a-2',3':c]-phenazine) serve as "molecular light switches" for DNA, displaying no photoluminescence in aqueous solution but lu...

[Ru(phen)2dppz](2+) and other closely related ruthenium(II) complexes containing π-extended ligands were found to be non or weakly emissive in water, while exhibiting significant luminescence intensity growth when bound to DNA, however, a satisfactory interpretation has not been provided on this "light switch" mechanism. In the present study, we investigated the vertical transitions and triplet...

We report evidence for fast photoinduced electron transfer mediated by the DNA helix that requires metal complexes that are avid intercalators of DNA. Photophysical studies have been undertaken to characterize the binding interactions of enantiomers of Ru(phen)3(2+), Ru(DIP)3(2+), and racemic Ru(bpy)2dppz2+ (where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, DIP = 4,7-diphenylphenanthroline, and dppz = dipyridophenazine) with Z-form poly d(GC). Parallel enhancements in steady state luminescent intensity and a lengthening of luminescent lifetimes are seen for ...

Luminescence quenching of [Ru(diphenyl-bpr)3]Cl2 and of [Ru(diphenyl-phen)3]Cl2 by 19 transition metal complexes is reported. These complexes have properties which permit them to supplement the widely used [Ru9bpy)3] 2+ and [Ru(phen)3] 2+ sensitizers. The excited state of these complexes can also be tuned significantly by solvent variation. Quenching is predominantly by diffusion. Decay times, ...
